Mystic Flame of Indian Summer

By Patrick Boyd

21st Century

Sapphire butterfly,
Slipping silk in the brilliance of day,
Made tragic by the fragment of night
In your heart.
Erratic in autumn,
A shimmering mirror blade
Robbed of will by wind,
Carried ever eastward,
Above dry riverbeds
And sweltering roads,
A fragment of light
In the jet stream,
Magic with the secret
Of compressed stars,
Ethereal bride to a sea of dusk.
Pour your longing into space.
Stretch your wings infinite,
Like silver thread in a wedding gown.
Burn inside the dark embrace,
With a mystic flame of Indian summer.
